Hocus Pocus Spell Book Replica Guide: The Movie Book, Mal’s Spell Book and a Leather One You Can Write In

Disney has never sold an officially licensed, screen-accurate Hocus Pocus spell book replica. The only official book is The Hocus Pocus Spell Book, a 2022 Disney Press hardcover for children. Every “replica” you’ll find, from Walmart’s faux-leather version to Etsy builds costing around $550, is fan-made or “inspired by” the film.

If you want a book that looks the part and that you can really write in, a handmade leather grimoire is the better buy. Below we cover what the movie prop actually looked like, how Mal’s spell book from Descendants is different, what each type of replica costs, and how to personalise one as a gift.

Why the Hocus Pocus spell book replica is trending (November 2026)

Halloween was on 31 October 2026, and interest in Winifred’s book rises every autumn. This year it has climbed faster than usual. Google Trends data fetched on 2 November 2026 (seven-day window) shows:

  • “hocus pocus spell book replica”: Breakout on YouTube search
  • “hocus pocus spell book from the movie”: +140%
  • “mal’s spell book”: +110% on Google search, +60% on YouTube

There are a few reasons. Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween showed the original film six times in October. Disney Store launched a new Hocus Pocus range on 14 September 2026, though it doesn’t include a spell book replica. Hocus Pocus 3 was announced in May. And Descendants: Wicked Wonderland came out in July, which has brought Mal’s book back into the conversation.

What the Hocus Pocus spell book from the movie actually looks like

The best source on the real prop is the Walt Disney Archives. In 2018, D23 published a look at the Hocus Pocus items in its collection. It confirms that three versions of the book were made for the 1993 film:

  • a practical book with the eye open
  • a practical book with the eye closed
  • a book with a remote-control eye that could move on camera

The cover, the eye and the clasp

These are the details that separate a good replica from a cheap one:

  • The eye. One living eye sits in the centre of the front cover. In the film it opens, looks around and watches the sisters.
  • Six metal serpents. They twist across both the front and the back covers.
  • Human fingers on the spine. This is the creepiest detail and the one cheap versions usually leave out.
  • A claw clasp. It holds the book shut.
  • Visible stitching. It’s part of the story that the book is “bound in human skin.”

D23 doesn’t say who built the prop. Be wary of any seller who claims a connection to the original maker.

Where the book comes from in the story

In the 1993 film, Winifred says the book was given to her “by the devil himself.” Hocus Pocus 2 (Disney+, 30 September 2022) added an origin story. In its 1653 prologue, the Mother Witch gives the book to a young Winifred. Many people searching “from the movie” are looking for that scene.

Inside the book are the life potion the sisters brew, the “Amok, amok, amok” spell that gets the townsfolk dancing, and the other spells fans like to copy into their own grimoires.

Is there an official Hocus Pocus spell book?

Yes, but it’s a book, not a prop. The Hocus Pocus Spell Book by Eric Geron was published by Disney Press on 30 August 2022. Here are the details, as listed on the publisher’s page:

  • Hardcover, about 240 pages, for ages 8 to 12
  • $14.99, ISBN 9781368076692 (eBook ISBN 9781368098021)
  • Spells, potions and witch history, with handwritten-style notes from Winnie, Mary and Sarah

As of 2 November 2026, it’s listed as out of stock on Disney Store. Bookshops can still order it with the ISBN. It’s a lovely gift for a young fan. It isn’t a screen-accurate replica, though, and it has no blank pages.

Disney Store’s 2026 Hocus Pocus collection costs $16.99 to $59.99 and includes a Binx bucket bag ($49.99) and an “Amuck!” mug. We couldn’t find an official spell book replica in it, or in the Disney park merchandise released in August 2026.

Mal’s spell book: a different book, a different fandom

“Mal’s spell book” comes from Disney’s Descendants films, not from Salem. In the story, Maleficent’s spell book is handed down to her daughter Mal. Disney published it as an illustrated in-world book:

  • Descendants: Mal’s Spell Book: Disney Books, published 14 July 2015, 192 pages, $12.99 hardcover, ISBN 9781484726389
  • Descendants 2: Mal’s Spell Book 2: More Wicked Magic: ISBN 9781368000413

Neither is a prop replica. Both are mostly sold secondhand now, on sites like eBay and ThriftBooks. The recent rise in searches probably comes from Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, which premiered on 16 July 2026 on Disney Channel and on 17 July 2026 on Disney+. As of 2 November 2026, we couldn’t confirm a new edition of Mal’s book tied to the film.

If you’re buying for a Mal fan, look for something in her purple and green, or something with a dragon on it as a nod to Maleficent.

Will Hocus Pocus 3 bring an official replica?

Maybe one day, but not yet. According to Deadline and Variety, Hocus Pocus 3 was announced on 6 May 2026. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are returning, and Anne Fletcher is expected to direct again. As of 2 November 2026, there’s no release date or trailer. On 30 October 2026, Najimy said she had no new details to share. One report said the film was “in production,” but most coverage describes it as in development. Until Disney confirms more, don’t trust any “official HP3 spell book” listing.

Resin replica or leather grimoire: which should you buy?

It depends on whether you want to display the book or use it.

Buy a resin or costume replica if…

  • you need it for one costume or one Halloween party
  • it’s going on a shelf and won’t be handled
  • screen accuracy matters more than paper quality

Cast resin can look great in photos. But it’s often heavy and stiff. Some costume pieces have glued or printed page blocks, so the book doesn’t open flat, or doesn’t open at all. Read the listing and the photos carefully.

Buy a leather grimoire if…

  • you want to use it as a spell book, a Book of Shadows, a dream diary or a recipe book
  • it’s a gift you’d like to last longer than one October
  • you’d like a name or initials on the cover

Real leather darkens and softens as you handle it. The corners wear and the cover takes on the marks of your hands. A grimoire should look like that. Ours are cut, tooled and stitched by hand in our workshop in Udaipur, near the lake. Many have thick, rough-edged paper that takes ink, pencil and dried flowers. You can browse our spell book journals or the larger leather grimoires.

To be clear, we don’t make a copy of Winifred’s book, and we wouldn’t call ours a replica. What we make is the feeling of that book: dark leather, metal hardware, and something on the cover watching you back. Our evil eye journals are the closest to that single staring eye.

Prefer to make one? A quick DIY route

Many fans make their own, and it’s a good autumn project:

  1. Start with a thick thrift-store hardback. Pick a heavy book with a sturdy spine.
  2. Build the cover texture. Use a printed cover sealed with Mod Podge, or layers of paper towel and glue painted to look like skin.
  3. Sculpt the details. Make the eye, the serpents and the spine fingers from air-dry or polymer clay, then paint them in metallic and flesh tones.
  4. Add a moving eye (optional). Make: magazine’s Arduino build shows how to animate it.

You’ll get a great prop, but it won’t be much good for writing in. Some people make a DIY cover for display and keep a leather journal for the real spells.

Gift and personalisation ideas

A spell book makes a good gift because it suits the person you’re giving it to. Here are some ideas we like:

  • Put their name where the title would be. “The Book of Ruth” sounds older than any film. We can engrave a name or initials on many covers. See our personalised journals.
  • A Sanderson set of three. Give three different books to three sisters or three best friends. Who gets to be Winnie is up to you.
  • For a Halloween birthday. Pair a grimoire with the Disney Press book for a young fan, so there’s one book to read and one to fill.
  • A kitchen “potion book”. It’s a perfect place for family recipes. The life potion stays in the film.
  • For practising witches. Many people who buy our grimoires use them as a Book of Shadows, not as a costume prop.
  • For a Mal fan. Choose a dragon cover or purple tones, and write the first entry in Mal’s voice.
  • Write on the first page. A short note in your own handwriting makes the book theirs.

Ordering from our workshop: the honest details

We’re small on purpose. Each book is made by hand, so it takes longer than ordering from a costume shop.

  • Making time. Engraving and handwork add a few days. If you need it by a certain date, order early.
  • Shipping. We send to the US, UK, UAE, Europe and elsewhere. You’ll see delivery estimates at checkout.
  • Import duties. Depending on your country and the order value, you may have to pay duty or tax when the parcel arrives. That’s set by your country’s customs, not by us, so check your local rules if you’re not sure.
  • Every piece is a little different. Leather grain, colour and stitching vary, and we think that’s a good thing.

Halloween has passed, but this is a good time to order a grimoire for next October, for a winter birthday, or for anyone who’ll write in it. You can see everything we make on our homepage.
