A fold out toiletry bag opens up so you can see everything at once. You don’t have to dig through one deep pouch. Choose a hanging style (it unrolls and hooks onto a rail) if your bathroom has no counter space. Choose an open-flat style (it zips open on three sides and lies on a shelf) if you’ll have a sink edge to work on. Stick with a classic upright dopp kit if you pack light and want a bag that stands up by itself.
Searches are climbing ahead of the holiday travel season. Below we compare the three styles, using the bags people are actually looking up.
Trend monitor: what people are searching
These are Google Trends figures, fetched on 28 October 2026:
- “lululemon open flat toiletry bag”: +120% over 30 days
- “sea to summit hanging toiletry bag”: +110% over 24 hours
- “packing cubes”: +90% over 24 hours
- “vera bradley hanging toiletry bag”: +60% over 30 days
- “fold out toiletry bag”: +40% over 24 hours and +60% over 30 days
We couldn’t find one launch or viral moment that explains the rise. Our best guess is that it’s a mix of two things. Thanksgiving falls on 26 November 2026. And lululemon’s Open-Flat bag is showing low-stock warnings again.
Fold out toiletry bag styles at a glance
| Style | How it opens | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanging | Unrolls and hooks onto a door, rail or branch | Tiny hotel bathrooms, camping, shared washrooms | Topples over when stood up; how strong the hook is |
| Open-flat | Zips open on three sides and lies flat | Counters and shelves; packing flat in a carry-on | No hook; you need a flat surface |
| Upright dopp kit | Zips along the top and stands upright | Short trips, grooming kits, gifts | Deeper, so there’s more rummaging |
Sea to Summit hanging toiletry bag: best for camping
The Small holds 3L and weighs about 2.8 oz (80 g). The Large weighs about 4 oz. It’s made from Ultra-Sil CORDURA nylon and has mesh pockets, a hook and a shatterproof mirror. Prices vary a lot. An older SmarterTravel review lists it from $34.95. MEC sells it for C$59.95, where it’s rated 4.8 from 123 reviews. Some colours are on closeout. The downside: Pack Hacker found it tips over because it has so little structure.
Vera Bradley hanging toiletry bag: best for organising lovers
The Iconic Hanging Travel Organizer measures about 11.5 × 29.25 in when open and has a clear pocket. Walmart rates it 4.9 from 121 ratings, but Macy’s currently lists it as unavailable. The nylon version costs $59.99 at Staples. Used ones sell for about $10–30 on eBay.
A warning: a site called verabradleysell.it.com ranks for this search, and it doesn’t look official. Buy from verabradley.com or a retailer you know.
lululemon open flat toiletry bag: best for counters
The Open-Flat Toiletry Bag holds 3.2L and measures 24 × 13 × 13 cm. It has four sections and zips open on three sides. It’s made from water-repellent recycled nylon and should be spot cleaned only. It’s rated 4.6 from 34 reviews. lululemon’s US page shows $58, though some TikToks and roundups quote $64. In the EU it costs €58.
There’s also a Small version: 1.5L, 12 × 12 × 12 cm, with two sections. It’s rated 4.2 from 6 reviews. The main complaints, from packsmart.blog, are that it’s expensive for nylon and has no hanging hook.
Carry-on rules: your toiletry bag isn’t your quart bag
The TSA 3-1-1 rule still applies as of 29 October 2026. Each liquid must be in a container of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, and all of them must fit in one quart-size bag per passenger. Medicines and food for babies and children are exempt. Officials have hinted at relaxing the rule since July 2025, but TSA hasn’t announced any change. Some airports with CT scanners let you leave liquids in your bag, but this varies from airport to airport.
So keep your liquids in the clear quart bag. Your fold-out bag holds everything else: razor, brush, solids, cotton pads. Full-size bottles go in checked luggage.
Where packing cubes fit
An open-flat bag works like a packing cube for your bathroom things. It sits flat beside your other cubes. A rolled hanging bag slides neatly down the side of a case. An upright kit needs its own corner, which suits a weekender better than a tightly packed carry-on.
Where we come in
To be clear, we don’t make nylon hanging rolls. At our workshop in Udaipur, we make structured leather toiletry bags that stand up by themselves on a sink edge. Each one carries the name you choose. Our travel dopp kit suits weekenders. Our compact toiletry bag is for people who pack light. We ship worldwide, and import duties depend on your country. We’re small on purpose.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a fold out and a hanging toiletry bag?
Both open up so you can see everything at once. A hanging bag unrolls downwards and has a hook for a door, towel rail or tent loop, so it suits bathrooms with no counter. An open-flat fold-out bag zips open on three sides and lies on a shelf or sink edge. It usually has no hook, but it packs flatter.
Is the lululemon Open-Flat Toiletry Bag worth $58?
It depends on how you use it. It holds 3.2L in four sections, repels water and is rated 4.6 from 34 reviews. Critics say it's expensive for nylon and point out it has no hanging hook. If you mostly stay somewhere with counter space, it works well. For campsites or tiny bathrooms, a hanging bag such as Sea to Summit's may suit you better.
Can a fold out toiletry bag replace my TSA quart bag?
No. As of 29 October 2026, TSA's 3-1-1 rule still requires liquids in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, all fitting in one quart-size bag per passenger. Keep that clear bag separate. Your toiletry bag holds the solids and tools, and full-size bottles go in checked luggage.
Does the Sea to Summit hanging toiletry bag stand up on its own?
Not well. The Ultra-Sil nylon keeps it very light: the Small weighs about 2.8 oz (80 g). But Pack Hacker found it tips over because it has little structure. It's designed to hang from its hook. If you want a bag that stands upright on a counter, a structured dopp kit is a better choice.
Where should I buy a Vera Bradley hanging organiser?
Buy from verabradley.com or a well-known retailer such as Staples or Walmart. Staples lists the nylon version at $59.99. Be careful with verabradleysell.it.com, which ranks in search results but doesn't look like an official Vera Bradley site and may sell fakes. Used ones also turn up on eBay for about $10–30.
