An older “Legacy Travel Kit” is listed as discontinued at some shops.

Reviews on carhartt.com sit around 4.5–4.7 stars, and many buyers say they bought it as a gift. Several roundups name it the best budget pick or the best for leak protection. The usual complaint is organisation. It’s basically one tough box with a zip, so small things end up at the bottom. If you want it with a company logo, Carhartt Company Gear handles branded orders, which can take 20–30 days.

Carhartt vs Carhartt WIP: not the same bag

Carhartt WIP is a separate European streetwear line, and buyers mix the two up all the time. Its wash bags look different and cost more:

The Cotopaxi Nido is the lightest kit here with a confirmed weight, 180 g for 4 litres of space. It’s made from recycled nylon and comes in the brand’s mixed-colour Del Día versions, so no two look quite alike. List price is $45, but we’ve seen it at $22.50 on sale. Buy it from cotopaxi.com or a big retailer.

Gravel dopp kit (Explorer Plus)

Gravel started on Kickstarter, and the Explorer Plus is its organiser-first kit. It lists at $79 and we’ve seen it at $63.20. If the Plus is too big or too small, it also comes in Mini, Slim and Max sizes. Pack Hacker’s review is worth reading before you choose a size. It’s the priciest synthetic kit in the table, and organisation is what you’re paying for.

L.L.Bean dopp kit and travel toiletry bag (Personal Organizer)

The L.L.Bean Personal Organizer hangs from a hook and has a removable mirror. It comes in four sizes: Small $24.95, Medium $39.95, Large $49.95 and Family $64.95. A Waxed Canvas Medium costs $110. The Large has 4.7 stars from 1,705 reviews. The catch, according to Pack Hacker, is that it doesn’t stand up well on a counter. Pick it if your hotel bathrooms tend to have a hook and not much shelf space.

Aer dopp kit

The Aer Dopp Kit 3 is a favourite with one-bag travellers. It’s around £49 in the UK. We couldn’t confirm its full specs, so check aersf.com for dimensions.

Osprey toiletry bag

Osprey’s Daylite Hanging Toiletry Kit weighed 3.84 oz in one test, which suits backpackers. Like the L.L.Bean, it hangs. We couldn’t confirm a current price, so see osprey.com.

Baggu dopp kit

Baggu’s recycled nylon dopp kit costs about $36 and comes in lots of prints. You’ll even find it in the MoMA Store. It’s soft rather than structured, and it’s more about fun than toughness.

Barbour toiletry bag

Searches for a Barbour washbag are up, but we found very little reliable information. Go straight to barbour.com rather than trusting third-party listings.

How long does each one last?

No brand gives a lifespan figure, so this is our view from years of making and repairing bags.

• Heavy polyester (Carhartt): the fabric outlasts most things. The zip usually goes first, then the water-repellent finish fades with use and washing.
• Light nylon (Cotopaxi, Baggu, Gravel, Aer): light and packable. Thin fabric scuffs and wears through at the corners sooner, and inside coatings can peel over time.
• Clear plastic (Carhartt WIP): easy to clean. It can crack or cloud if it’s crushed or kept somewhere cold.
• Waxed canvas (L.L.Bean, Carhartt WIP Canvas): can be re-waxed, so it ages rather than wearing out, much like leather.
• Full-grain leather: scuffs fade into patina. You can condition it, re-stitch it and replace the zip. A well-made one can easily outlast several synthetic kits.

Put simply, synthetic kits are cheap to replace and leather is built to be repaired. Neither choice is wrong. They suit different people.

The leather alternative: a dopp kit that ages instead of wearing out

Before you fly: TSA liquids rules in 2026

Whichever bag you choose, the official TSA 3-1-1 rule still applies:

• Containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less
• All of them in one quart-size bag
• One bag per passenger
• Medications and food or drink for infants and children are exempt
