Moonster Leather Journal vs Louise Carmen vs Barnes & Noble: Which Is Worth It?

The Moonster leather journal is good value: a rustic, full-grain buffalo leather book for about $27–$36. It isn’t a true Louise Carmen dupe, though, unless you buy the Refillable model. Louise Carmen sells refillable vegetable-tanned covers, made up in Paris, that cost about $200 to $750 once you add charms. Barnes & Noble sells plain bookshop journals for around $30. Etsy is full of refillable trifold look-alikes. And if you want a name on the cover, a handmade journal with free engraving is a fourth option.

We make leather journals in a small workshop in Udaipur, by the lake, so yes, we have a horse in this race. We’ve tried to be fair anyway. Everything about the other brands below comes from their own pages or from published reviews, and prices are as they stood on 30 October 2026.

Why everyone is searching “moonster leather journal” right now

No single news story or launch explains the jump. The Google Trends figures we pulled on 30 October 2026 show the pattern:

  • “moonster leather journal”: Breakout over the past 7 days
  • “louise carmen journal”: +200% over 30 days
  • “louise carmen”: +200% over 30 days, and +90% in the 24 hours to 30 October 2026
  • “etsy leather journal”: +140% over 30 days
  • “barnes and noble leather journal”: +120% over 30 days
  • “leather journals”: +60% over 30 days

The most likely cause is Louise Carmen. Customers film themselves building a custom notebook in the brand’s Paris shops, and those videos have spread across TikTok. Shay Mitchell is one of the people who filmed it. CNBC covered young Americans buying $200 notebooks on 9 April 2026. In a search snippet of that piece (we couldn’t open the article itself), founder Nathalie Valmary is quoted as saying Americans now place about 60% of online orders. Trend researcher CORQ predicted in June 2026 that Louise Carmen dupes would be in demand.

Then the price puts people off, and they go looking for something cheaper. Moonster shows up in those dupe searches. Several “best leather journal” lists dated August to October 2026 also rank it first or second. Holiday gift shopping is starting too. Several Moonster models (Refillable Tree of Life, Refillable Heart and Psalm 46:10) showed as sold out on Moonster’s homepage on 30 October 2026.

The Moonster leather journal: what you actually get

Moonster is a small UK business. Its press releases place it in Berkshire and disagree on when it started (one says 2014, the other 2016); its official About page gives 2014, and its contact page lists a London address. It sells through its own website and through its Amazon store, where Amazon stores and ships the orders.

Leather grade

Moonster’s FAQ says its covers are “100% full grain buffalo leather”, about 2mm thick, oil-tanned and distressed, and never bonded or fake leather. It says the hides are a by-product of other industries. That’s the company’s own claim, and as of 30 October 2026 we hadn’t seen independent proof either way. The cover scratches easily, and reviewers mention it a lot. Moonster says scuffs are part of the look and you can often rub them out with your thumb. A six-month durability test by Journalreviewr found scuffs but a solid binding, and scored it 4.7/5.

Paper weight

Most Moonster journals use handmade cotton paper from India, made from clothing-industry waste. It’s about 125gsm, tree-free and acid-free. It’s thick and absorbent and takes pencil, paint and fountain pen. Some inks bleed slightly, though, and reviewers don’t agree on fountain pens. Moonster’s FAQ says they’re fine with a little bleed. Leathergenesis says the paper isn’t ideal for them, and Journalreviewr suggests testing wet ink first. The Refillable Classic is different: 320 lined pages of smoother 70gsm paper.

Sizes and models

  • Classic Lined: 8″×6″, 400 pages, from $26.91 (normally $34.95)
  • Classic Blank: 7″×5″, recycled acid-free cotton paper, from $26.91
  • Refillable Classic: A5 (8.75″×6.25″), 320 lined pages, pen included, $32.36 (normally $35.95)
  • Tree of Life Lined: $26.77 (normally $33.95)
  • Heart Blank: $26.96 (normally $29.95)
  • Lined refills: $15.26 (normally $16.95)

Those prices reflect roughly 10% off on Moonster’s site as of 30 October 2026, with no end date shown. Prices and stock change often, so check before you buy.

Refills

This matters most if you came here from Louise Carmen. Most Moonster journals are keepsake books, so once they’re full, they’re full. Only the Refillable and Psalm 46:10 models take new inserts. The Moonster FAQ says the Tree and Heart designs will be refillable “soon”.

Shipping and personalisation

According to the Moonster FAQ, its own site ships only to the US and UK. US standard shipping is $9.90 (3–7 days) and expedited is $13.82 (2–4 days). In the UK it’s £5.28 standard or £6.98 expedited. Orders over $75 or £60 ship free. If you’re in the UAE or Europe, you’ll need to use Amazon. Moonster doesn’t offer engraving and says that’s because of how it sells on Amazon. Its FAQ suggests taking the journal to a local leather engraver.

Verdict: a good, honest everyday journal for the money. It isn’t a Louise Carmen lookalike unless you buy the Refillable Classic, and there’s no way to put a name on it at checkout.

Louise Carmen journal: the one that started the dupe hunt

Nathalie Valmary founded Louise Carmen in December 2016 with her husband Fabien and daughter Victoire. The online shop followed around 2020. There are six models (Pocket, Ernest, Honoré, Organizer, Roadbook and Magnum) in three sizes and more than 15 colours of vegetable-tanned leather. The leather darkens and changes as you use it.

The shop visit is a big part of the appeal. You can build a notebook at 51 Galerie Vivienne or 6 Passage du Grand Cerf (both in Paris 75002), or at Printemps Haussmann and Le Bon Marché. It takes about an hour. Online orders ship after 4+ business days, plus delivery time, and the Louise Carmen site says customs duties are included.

Then there’s the cost. The Globe and Mail priced it out in February 2026: notebooks from about $197 and charms at $32–$97 each, and a fully customised notebook came to $756 shipped to Canada. It’s lovely. It’s also a lot for a notebook.

Barnes and Noble leather journal: the simple bookshop option

Barnes & Noble stocks a rotating range of leather and leather-look journals. A typical example is the Leather DK Brown Herringbone Journal (6×8) at $29.95. It was out of stock for shipping when we checked on 30 October 2026. These are mostly one-piece, non-refillable books. They’re handy if you want to pick one up in a US store the same day. Listings don’t always say much about the leather grade or paper weight, so read the details or look at the journal in person before you buy.

Etsy leather journal dupes

Etsy now has whole pages of “Louise Carmen journal dupe” listings. Most are A5 or A6 refillable trifold or traveler’s-notebook covers, which is much closer to the Louise Carmen format than most Moonster books. You’ll also find DIY patterns if you’d like to make your own. Quality varies a lot from seller to seller. Check that the listing says genuine leather (not “PU” or bonded), what the inserts are, and where it ships from, because that decides delivery time and any import charges.

The fourth option: a handmade Udaipur journal with your name on it

This is where we come in. Every Toteaa leather journal is cut, stitched and finished by hand by artisans in our Udaipur workshop. We’re small on purpose. Your name, or the name of the person you’re giving it to, is engraved on the cover for free. Moonster can’t offer that, and Louise Carmen does its own version with charms at a much higher price.

  • If you liked the Louise Carmen idea of swapping notebooks in and out, look at our refillable journals.
  • If it’s a gift, our engraved journals come with the name already on, so there’s nothing for them to arrange.
  • If you like the rugged Moonster look, buffalo leather gives you a similar thick, weathered feel.

Now the honest part. We ship worldwide from India, including to the US, UK, UAE and Europe. That takes longer than an Amazon Prime order from a UK or US warehouse. Depending on your country, you may also have to pay import duty or VAT when the parcel arrives. We’d rather tell you now than have it surprise you at the door. If you need it before a specific date, order early, especially for the holidays.

Which leather journal should you buy?

  • Cheapest good real-leather journal: a Moonster Classic, about $27 on sale, if you’re in the US or UK.
  • Closest cheap Louise Carmen dupe: an Etsy trifold, or the Moonster Refillable Classic at $32.36.
  • The real experience: Louise Carmen, ideally built in person in Paris, if a $200+ notebook is in your budget.
  • Something you can buy in a US shop the same day: Barnes & Noble, if your local store has it in stock.
  • A personalised gift with a name on it: a handmade engraved journal, from us or from a good Etsy maker.

Whichever you choose, real leather wants a little care. Use a leather conditioner now and then and keep it out of the rain. On oil-tanned leather like Moonster’s, conditioner or mink oil will darken the cover. None of these journals is waterproof.

If you’d like to see the rest of what we make, from journals to duffels and dopp kits, have a look around the workshop.

Frequently asked questions

Is Moonster a good Louise Carmen dupe?

Only partly. Most Moonster journals are one-piece rustic buffalo-leather books that can't be refilled, which is a different look from Louise Carmen's refillable covers. The Moonster Refillable Classic (A5, $32.36 on sale as of 30 October 2026) is the closest match. For the trifold style, Etsy's refillable dupes are usually nearer.

Is the Moonster leather journal real leather?

Moonster says its journals are 100% full-grain buffalo leather, about 2mm thick and oil-tanned, never bonded or fake leather. It also says the hides are a by-product of other industries. That's the company's own claim. Reviewers agree the leather is thick and sturdy but scratches easily, which Moonster describes as part of the rustic look.

Can you use a fountain pen in a Moonster journal?

Reviews disagree. Moonster's FAQ says its 125gsm handmade cotton paper takes fountain pen with some slight bleed. Leathergenesis says it isn't ideal for fountain pens, and Journalreviewr suggests testing wet inks on a back page first. The Refillable Classic uses smoother 70gsm lined paper, which behaves differently, so test your favourite ink first.

Does Moonster personalise or engrave journals?

No. Moonster says it doesn't offer personalisation because of how it sells and ships through Amazon. Its FAQ suggests taking the journal to a local leather engraver. If you want a name on the cover without arranging it yourself, look for a maker that engraves before shipping. We include free name engraving on our handmade Udaipur journals.

How much does a Louise Carmen journal cost?

According to The Globe and Mail (February 2026), Louise Carmen notebooks start at about $197, charms cost $32 to $97 each, and a fully customised notebook came to $756 shipped to Canada. You can build one in person at the Paris shops in Galerie Vivienne or Passage du Grand Cerf, or order online. The site says customs duties are included.

Does Moonster ship outside the US and UK?

Not from its own website, which ships only to the US and UK. Free shipping starts at $75 or £60. If you live in the UAE, Europe or elsewhere, Moonster's Amazon store is the usual route. Availability and delivery times then depend on your local Amazon site.
